Weekly wrap : still training strong !

Today marks the end of week 16 of my Paris Marathon training. I changed up my schedule because it was in the twenties in the morning when I usually run, but managed to fit everything in.

  • Monday : off
  • Tuesday : Ran 7K at lunchtime then did 75 minutes of yoga in the evening.
  • Wednesday : Ran 8K in the evening after work.
  • Thursday : off
  • Friday : travel for work, so off
  • Saturday : it was my long run. 23 miles (37 km).
  • Sunday : 35 minutes swimming easy laps

Some thoughts on the week :

  • I really prefer running first thing in the morning. Running at lunch is not very practical, and running in the evening ? I find my form suffers and I have a hard time emptying my mind of the day’s problems. And I hate that work can interfere with my ”me time”.
  • I was so happy to go back to yoga. The teacher did all my favorite poses.
  • Like my last long run, I felt really confident and good about my 23 miler. I took my time and did my usual Galloway run/walk combination. It took me 5 hours. I figure if I have another 3 for marathon distance, and I speed things up a little as planned, I should be able to hit my 4:40 time goal. I ran though Paris again and I think these long runs through the city are great mental preparation for race day.
  • My long runs are supposed to be every 3 weeks now, but I moved this one up by a week because I have a half marathon destination race next weekend. Adding on 10 miles in an area I don’t know would not have been very practical.
  • I experimented with my camera, tried to take some new shots but was not very successful :

Action shot with timer, but all I got was my head :

Another shot with the timer but the angle was awful (and I had almost finished my run and didn’t have the patience to play with it) :

At the pool but the mirror was dirty and smudgy :

I did get a great shot of the memorial of the terrorist attacks. I hadn’t been, so decided to go on my run. It was very moving, though in all honesty, I found it kind of dumpy. I hope some kind of permanent memorial will be built because this makeshift one is not that great.

The rest of the week was quite busy. I planned a surprise birthday party for my daughter. We had 20 teenagers on Saturday night. While they were in the living, my hubby and I were enjoying a glass of champagne and pizza in the kitchen.  Because I ran ALL THOSE MILES I let myself eat ALL THE BIRTHDAY PARTY FOOD. And loved every single bite.

Today, we went to see CATS, it has been in France since the fall. I had seen it 20 years ago in NY and it has been modernized. I cried when Memories was sung. The woman who did it was amazing (and I never cry at things like that).

Thinking of my friends, family & fellow bloggers who were hit by the blizzard this weekend.

I am linking up with Holly and Tricia at Hoho runs and Misssippipiddlin for their Weekly Wrap. Be sure to head on over and offer some positive support to the participating bloggers ! There are more and more people every week with fun, new blogs to discover.

How was your week ? Were you hit by the blizzard ?

Way to go on a great week of training!

Working out in the morning is the only way that I can get my workout it. I find that if I try to fit it in another time, there is a 99% chance that it wont happen!! I use to do a Friday 12 pm yoga class that I missed way to many times so I rearranged my Friday mornings so that I can go to a 9:30am class instead.

Good job getting in those 23 miles!! Super impressive.

Yes, I have missed many mid day or evening classes…. I find it hard to stop what I am doing then go back to it.

I have never seen Cats but way back when I played the piano Memories was one of the songs I loved to play. I do like the shot of the memorial, although I agree it would be nice for something more permanent. Angles and self-photography are tough to master. I like the time lapse mode on GoPro so I can get multiple shots. For every 50 or so photos I may get 1 that is good. Still much easier than back in the days with actual film! And glad you enjoyed the birthday party food!

Your shots are great. We have a go pro but I haven’t used it yet. I should try it, I am sure it would provide some interesting shots. And anyway, like anything, it is a Learning process.

23 miles is no joke! The longest training run I ever did was 24 and that was with my Mom and having the company was crucial. I just found your blog through the linkup and I must say, I’m intrigued and inspired. I simply adore Paris and I can’t wait to read more of your posts! 🙂

You are doing a GREAT job! Very proud of you. Wish I could run a marathon in 5 hours, let alone less time!

No snow here. Which makes me happy. Just very cold.

And btw, I loved living in MD (just 1 yr) and TX (17 yrs), but don’t really like NY (which is where I’ve lived most of my life) or VT (7 yrs).

23 miles and feeling good is awesome! Pizza and wine sounds perfect lol now, 20 teenagers that is brave! I bet they had a ball.
35 minutes sounds like a long time to swim laps, my heart was pounding last year after 10 minutes lol
I hope you have a nice race weekend.

Looks to me like you can tackle anything you want, l am not sure what is more impressive the teenager party or 23 miles and swimming. Your inspiring😃

Karen, you are doing great! 23 miles should be a great confidence booster! You can certainly do 3 more miles. Is this the longest run you’ll do before the actual marathon? Your self-timer picture turned out about like mine, lol. But I did get a mine tri pod for my phone with a wireless remote so I’m gonna play with it. The pizza is making me hungry it is lunch time here! Have a great week my friend!

The Galloway plans call for going beyond 26 miles ! I have a 26 miler and a 28. He says that is how you push your wall… that when you hit the wall it is usually the length of your last long run. Not sure if it is true or not, but I don’t have another long run for a while ! Its now more speed work / mile repeats.
A tri pod is a great idea, hadn’t thought of it…. I need to put time aside to play and practice with my camera.

Great week!!! We missed the snow thankfully, as I think Mother Nature has cut us some slack after our past 2 winters in the Chicagoland area.

It is and while the singer was amazing, I think probably no one will ever do it better than Barbara Streisand.

Karen, you have done amazing with your training and you will have an awesome race! I was going to ask you about longer runs, but see in the comments you will run a 26 and 28. You will absolutely be ready for your race! I must say you are very brave to have 20 teenagers at your house for a party! I’d be in the kitchen having an adult beverage too! I’m the worst at getting action shots. I always just give up! Thanks for linking with us!

Glad I am not the only one who hasn’t figured out the action shot thing ! Kind of frustrates me though because there are so many great action shots out there. I am sure my photography could be so much better if I spend a little more time on it.

Thanks for sharing the picture of the memorial. It’s nice to see things that we don’t get to see in the news here.

23 miles!! That’s great! 20 miles is the farthest I have ever ran in prep for a marathon…not sure I could (mentally) do 23. I love seeing all your pics, and I can totally relate to experimenting with the camera for shots/angles LOL I think I’m gonna write a blog and “showcase” all my bloopers (well, maybe not ALL of them)….
