Weekly wrap : no wonder I’ve been tired !

This past week was quite typical between work, family & fitness, though busier than usual. Ten things from my week :

Family : my daughters kept me busy

  • With daughter #1 I had an informational meeting at the high school on future orientation/education options. Because many of the universities and schools are state run, the application process is centralized. I will spare you the details, but trust me, its complicated.
  • On Saturday we went to an open house at one of the schools my daughter is interested in. Even if there were a crazy amount of people I was very glad we went, it was highly informative. We finished the morning with a sushi lunch, her favorite.
  • My second daughter was in Barcelona for 4 days on a school trip. Packing, laundry, airport pick ups, unpacking and more laundry sums up that adventure.

Work : third week in a row with a day trip in Europe

  • I travelled to Switzerland and back by train on Thursday. The train was running late so waiting in a cold train station called for a big cup of coffee. Whenever I travel I seem to OD on coffee.

Food : crockpot and muffins

  • I got a multi tasking crock pot thing for my birthday and I have been experimenting with it. It fries, bakes, steams, makes yogurt, slow cooks…. I tried a recipe where it was supposed to bake a pork roast. The recipe called for white wine, and the wine boiled / steamed the meat. While it was edible, it was not great. I have tried several recipes and so far, nothing comes out as expected. I really wanted it for the crock pot function, which I haven’t used yet.

  • My daughter and I made muffins and banana bread. We made one bowl of batter and split the batch. I added pecans and made muffins. She added chocolate chips and made a loaf.

Fitness : DNS & continued great weather

  • Despite the travel, I got in 3 runs and 45 minutes of laps at the pool.
  • I had a race Sunday and decided not to go. It was a local 10K and when I signed up I wanted to use it as a training run. However, as my training plan called for 8 x1 mile repeats at marathon pace, with a 5 minute walk in-between, I figured a 10K race wouldn’t be very practical. And since I had a hard time applying my training plan to last week’s Sun Run Half Marathon, I preferred to stick to my plan rather than throw things off with another race. So, DNS.
  • There were so many people out running today, I am sure because of the weather, but I had to slalom   for most of my run.

  • Finally, I am not one to complain but I’ve.been.tired. Ever since I got up at 4 a.m. to travel to Italy a couple weeks agao, I just can not seem to catch up. It is probably a combination of training, traveling, and a couple poor nights of sleep. Then I looked back and realized I ran 192 km (120 miles) in January, which is the most I have ever run. That might be influencing my fatigue also.

I am linking up with Holly and Tricia at Hoho runs and Misssippipiddlin for their Weekly Wrap. Be sure to head on over and offer some positive support to the participating bloggers ! There are more and more people every week with fun, new blogs to discover.

I”m tired too. Not sure if it’s the cumulative stress from the past couple of weeks or menopause. Whatever it is, it’s slowing my paces. I hope to get back on track over the next couple of weeks.

Maybe its just the winter. I find my energy comes back with longer days and brighter sun, but man… am I dragging.

120 miles is huge! That is a big month 🙂 Traveling is tiring too, but I sure would love to see Switzerland. That sounds like an awesome crock put! Mine just slow cooks. I need to use it more, I am such a lazy cook.
I hope your daughter finds a school she likes 🙂

Thanks Karen, my daughter knows what she wants to do, so I am sure she’ll find a school she will love. Switzerland is nice but almost too boring. Major rule followers and not much room for spontaneity.

Hope the tired feeling goes away! That’s a lot of miles and travel really impacts you! I’m also in the OD on coffee mode with my trip and the jetlag. I scaled my training back, which is probably helpful but I feel like a balloon since I also tend to eat a lot while traveling. Good luck to your daughter with the school search!

Eating while traveling is my worst nightmare. When I am in the US I get an apartment so I can cook, but that doesn’t work so well in Europe. Hope you have a good week. Crappy weather announced.

Ah, travel and training will wear you down! How could the trains be late in Switzerland? I thought that wasn’t allowed! 😉

The train was leaving from France…. and going to Switzerland. But you are right, it is rare to have a late train IN Switzerland.

I think we are all tired, I can agree- I practiced deep coach sitting yesterday, yup, no shame in my game! LOL! I am trying to figure out how to run a couple local 5K’s I signed up for and still get the extra miles in that Coach M wants me to run- I will figure it out I am sure 🙂 have a great week!

Deep couch sitting works for me too once in a while. I forced myself to go to the pool Saturday and when I got home I was so tired. I was asleep for a nap BEFORE my head hit the pillow.

Oh wow, you certainly do have a busy life!
All that traveling, definitely does wear on a person.
I think it is great you know your body/schedule enough to know if you should run in a race or not, and go with your other planned training! Kuddo’s to you for that!

Yes, I was happy with my decision. Listening to my body has gotten me this far without injury.

I am tired just reading about everything you’ve got going on! All those travels can really wear you out! Good for you for listening to your body and forgoing the 10K. I think that was really smart for your long term goals. That crockpot sounds awesome! Mine is about as basic as can be but yours must be able to prepare pretty much an entire meal all by itself!

I almost wished I just got the basic crock pot… but I don’t think you can find them in France ! My husband had no idea what it was. LOL.

What an awesome month of miles you had. No wonder you’re tired. Your running trail is so beautiful. Oh my, I would much love a piece of that chocolate chip banana bread right now as I am starving!

I did have a great month and the banana bread was wonderful. Recipe on PaleOMG !

Must be the time of year, I also was so tired this past week. In fairness, I did have a cold too, but I was just so sluggish and off. Applying for college/university is just as hard on the parents as their children/student. Hopefully your daughter is accepted at her first choice! Nice job on your weekend run, the weather looked beautiful

I don’t blame you for being tired! And sometimes i feel like when my usual sleep/wake schedule is disrupted it can take awhile to adjust back to feeling normal. Hope you can find some time to rest up soon!

You make a very good point about the sleep cycle… it has been disrupted a bit and it could definitely be contributing.

Well, you are training for a marathon! 😉 I think it’s normal to be tired at your mileage, especially adding in travel and other stresses. I often think my fatigue is mental, not necessarily physical if that makes any sense. The only time I have a problem with my crockpot is when I forget to turn it on or plug it in. LOL. My middle son knew exactly where he wanted to go to college and handled everything himself. My youngest will be the opposite. Thanks for linking with us Karen!

I don’t particularly feel mental fatigue but since my brain is running on over time with all that is going on, it could definitely be linked ! I can tell when I get really tired, because I need to nap. Sure sign !

I have been majorly tired recently…this past weekend I slept until almost 7:30AM….two hours later than usual. Wow…120 miles in a month! That’s amazing!!!!

A lot of people seem to be tired at the moment. Maybe because its the dead of winter ??

You are quite busy, amazing how much you are doing. Remember we all need sleep and rest from our hectic schedules. I think we all need to see the more sun through the gray skies.

    • Karen - Fit in France February 9, 2016 at 9:33 pm Reply

Luckily all my weeks are not that crazy !

  14. Tricia@MissSippipiddlin February 9, 2016 at 8:03 pm Reply

I get it. 120 is a lot to be tired over period. Then you add in a race, traveling and family it’s no wonder. I’m sure in the middle of it all it doesn’t seem like a lot but looking back it’s like Oh man how did I get it all done.
A crockpot that fries? Wow this does sound interesting. I’m not a very good cook so I can relate to just ok meals.
Thanks Karen for linking up with us!! Have a great week!
