Weekly wrap : Almost the home stretch

After a week of travel to Mexico for work, stopping to see my parents in Orlando, I started last week in Fort Lauderdale for a conference, before flying back to France on Thursday. I love Florida, and the heat and humidity made things vacation-y like, and not too much ”work like”.

My hotel was right on the beach :

…which meant anytime we had a longish break, I would go sit in the sand !

I NEVER got sick of the view. Despite it being spring break, I didn’t see many college kids and there was room for everyone. (I had all these stereotypical images of spring break in Fort Lauderdale, with drunk college students and wet t-shirt contests. Didn’t see either.)

One of the highlights of my stay was a sports massage. I have been wanting one but quite nervous about the pain (yes, I can be a wuss). I was worried it would make me sore and I wouldn’t be able to run for a couple days. But my colleague was so over the top about how wonderful her massage was, I bit the bullet, and scarified myself for a couple hours in the spa.

The massage was amazing, a combination of deep tissue and stretching. It hurt like hell but was bearable. The therapist was not a softy, working through the knots in my glutes and upper back, as well as rubbing my IT band. Holy cow !

With lots of discipline I was able to keep up my marathon training :

  • Monday : nothing (conference).
  • Tuesday : 60 minutes on the treadmill
  • Wednesday : upper body weights + 40 minute run where I started on the treadmill then finished running along the ocean once the sun came up

20160316_074903 20160316_075106(0)

  • Thursday : travel / arrive home
  • Friday : 15 minutes of ab work, 15 minutes upper body + 6 km run walk. I felt very clunky/clumbsy running. My gait was off and I think the jet lag wasn’t helping.
  • Saturday : Rest !
  • Sunday : this was my last major run of my training. I had 12 x 1 mile repeats at marathon pace on the plan, with 5 minute walking in between. I converted into kilometers and did 19 x 1 km repeats with a 3 minute walk in between each. It.felt.amazing. I hit practically all of my paces, I had no pain what so ever, no major niggle, and NO muscle tightening or cramping, not even of my right shin which gets very tight very easily, even more so with speed work. I was praising the massage therapist the entire 3 hours ! Not sure if it is a coincidence but my muscles felt GREAT. This run really boosted my confidence.

It was cold, around 35 degrees, but no complaints ! So much better than the Floridian heat & humidity.

I spent the rest of the day cooking, doing laundry, cleaning, with lots of stretching and napping thrown into the mix. I was also very grateful for a home cooked meal.20160320_132203

You did a great job keeping up with your training while traveling! I have had a sport massage. They are quite painful, but very helpful. I hope you fully enjoy your taper. Rest. Eat. Obsess over what you are going to wear. Check the weather every hour. LOL. Thanks for linking with us Karen.

LOL, yes I have already started stalking the weather. So far, it looks to be almost too warm but no rain. I am sure that could change though…
I also need to start thinking about the logistics…
      Have a great week.

I got to hand it to you Karen, that is super you kept up with your training while on your trip. I know it was no easy task for you. The beach and sand just has a calming effect doesn’t it. I could sit and listen to the waves for hours.
Sounds like you got an awesome massage and one that really helped where you needed it.
So taper time for you lady! Enjoy it!
Appreciate your support Karen, have great week!

Yes, beach and sand have a calming effect and it wasn’t too hot. I am not a heat person, but high 70s and low 80s were perfect for a couple hours on the beach.

I have also been making a real effort to cut back on alcohol (even if I don’t drink much to begin with) and sweets (where I do have too many). The tweaks to nutrition may be helping too.

Sounds like you had a nice trip! I’m so sorry we weren’t closer! Hard to believe that we were only a few hours apart, tho. You’ve had a great training cycle and I think you are ready!

Sorry we missed each other, I would have come to Sarasota to cheer you on but it was a bit too far when I only had a couple days. Maybe in Chicago one day !

Congrats on your last long run and making it to taper! I’m the same way about massages. I’ve never had one because I’ve been scared to! But I have a gift card for a spa, so I have no reason to not try it.

    • Karen - Fit in France March 21, 2016 at 7:03 am Reply

They do ask you how much you like the pressure (or not) and I had her push quite hard… I figured I should be getting all the benefit out of it. People are often scared to have a massage but I consider it an investment.

Fantastic long run! I love being in the sunshine when I’m not running, but prefer cooler temps on a long run to humidity and heat. I’ve never had a sports massage. I think if I ever ran a full marathon I’d get one after as a special reward! 😉 Have a great week!

That was quite a whirlwind trip, but how nice you got to see your parents and have some good relaxation. Great job on the long run! I would take cold and sunshine any day over heat and humidity lol I do love sitting on the beach though!
I have had a massage a few times and each time had very good results running after them. Enjoy your taper 🙂

We will see if the benefit of the massage lasts but its good to know that you have also seen results afterwards. I hope it will last for another 2 weeks !

Woot!!!! Taper time!! (have I told you lately how excited I am for you? maybe once or twice?) I have never had a sports massage, but did have massages after both my marathon and Ultra last summer (which were a month apart)( They felt great, but I’m a cheapo and have a hard time shelling out the money, especially when I have my foam roller LOL

Thanks Kim for the enthusiasm. I am really excited and have already started stalking the weather ! The sports massage was pricey but I considered it preventive medicine.

Your week sounds lovely, especially sitting on the beach during your breaks. I’d love some warm weather right now.

I keep thinking about a sports massage. My physio did a lot of massage on my calf and that hurt but always felt good afterwards. Maybe at the end of next month once I’m back into my training again I should book myself one.

Florida is lovely and you certainly enjoyed some sunny days there. My first massage was super scary, but now I include them (sports massage) when I feel it is needed. After running a half marathon yesterday, I am scheduled for one today! So glad you are in the home stretch after training so hard. You will do well running the marathon.

Good job getting your runs in with work travel! Although I would’ve run on the beach at least part of the time. I LOVE running on the beach, and so rarely get the opportunity.

I’ve never had a sports massage, only regular ones. I probably should do it. And in fact I really do need to book a massage for this month.

3 cheers for a long run with no pain & the taper! I’m so ridiculously excited for you.

Actually, the fact that I was making myself get up at 6 to run on the treadmill made me be reasonable the evening before… limiting the alcohol and desserts and forcing myself to go to be early.

That last long run workout sounds tough. So a big high five for finishing that one! I’ve traveled for work before & even though I try, I always have such a hard time getting all my workouts in. So I am quite impressed you managed to keep up with your training!

    • Karen - Fit in France March 21, 2016 at 7:52 pm Reply

I did have to consume less alcohol / desserts and make an effort to go to be earlier. But I was so afraid of coming home bloated and feeling yucky, that it kept me focused.

  18. Chaitali March 21, 2016 at 3:04 pm Reply

Those beach photos look beautiful! I miss the beach but I should be getting some good beach time later this year so it’s ok 🙂 Congrats on getting through all that hard training and getting to taper! That massage sounds like it was great. I’ve been sticking to swedish massage as I’m a bit scared of the idea of a sports massage too.
