Weekly wrap #7 : A high and a low

Happy Monday to you ! Did you have a good week ?

The highlight of my week was seeing one of my BFFs from college. We had both moved to France when we graduated and both married Europeans. Our kids are the same ages and we both have a love for anything international. Her husband is Spanish and they eventually moved away from France. I had not seen her for 6 years. They have since moved back to the US, and happen to live near my company’s office. So I just had to see her. While we only had 2 hours, it felt like we were back in college. One of those friendships that you just pick up where you left off.

Something else happened this week, and I am SO DISAPPOINTED, but only have myself to blame.

I have been looking forward to my fall race schedule for months. One of the races I signed up for was the Paris – Versailles, a 16km course between the two cities. It is one of the iconic races here and I have never done it.

So back in May I sign up, luckily because it sold out in June.

I have been talking about it for the past 3 weeks with all my runner friends & colleagues. I was getting really excited.

As it is next weekend, I went on the website Saturday night to start anticipating logistics. I decided to check my registration and got this message (sorry its in French !) :

20150920_203839

What !!??## there is no one with that name registered. So I go through my email (luckily I don’t clean out my email box too often) and find a note from the race organizers. It is an order form that I need to print off and send in with my check and doctor’s certificate.

OMG.

Did I FORGET to send in the information ?

Seriously ? Me ? The type A personality who doesn’t let the minutest detail slip, who anticipates everything months in advance, who is obsessive about paying bills on time, never having an empty fridge, and planning doctors appointments . How could I have FORGOTTEN to send in my race registration ?

So I immediately sent an email. And immediately got one back. Had my check been cashed ? Uh ooh. I am getting a bad feeling that I screwed up. So I check. Indeed, I can not find any trace of writing a check, so how can they find a trace of a cashed check ?

They were really great though, very reactive and are trying to find someone who has backed out, so that I can buy their bib ! Fingers crossed.

I actually signed up for three races on Tuesday of this week, so I went back and double checked my registration !

Otherwise, despite traveling this past week for work I got in lots of running / exercise :

  • Sunday : La Parisienne 6,7 km race. Beat last year’s time by 1′ 20 ” !
  • Monday : 2 miles on the treadmill & some minor weights (smallest hotel gym I have ever been to)
  • Tuesday : 8 km on the treadmill
  • Wednesday : travel
  • Thursday : 8 km on the treadmill, with hills (to prepare for Paris Versailles – hilly race – which I will am unsure about now)
  • Friday : travel
  • Saturday : gorgeous weather, 13km long run

Wow, I would be terribly unorganized if I had to mail doctor’s certificates and physical checks! I’m thankful all the registrations are completely online and credit card based here in the US. As far as I know, no doctor’s notes needed (unless for some of the ultra-distance stuff, have never tried that). At any rate, glad you got to spend time with your friend! That is awesome reconnecting with friends and picking right up as if you’d never been apart!

Most all of the races are credit card based and for the life of me, I can not remember why this one was paper / check. I think it is because I didn’t have my medical certificate to upload (it was on a different computer), so I figured I would print it off. Oh well. Lesson learned !

I hope you will be able to run the race next weekend. I’ve done that before, thought I registered then went back in my e-mails and had no record of it. Luckily these were smaller, local runs with race day registration.

Yes, lucky they were a smaller race and you could sign up. I am just grateful I had the good sense to check registration. Had I shown up for race packet pick up and not been registered I would have been really really upset.

I do hope you get to run in the race! I haven’t done it exactly like that but I can get it into my mind I did something and look forward to it and completely forget to follow through. My fingers are crossed for you!! Congratulations on your PR in the La Parisienne how awesome is that! Thanks for your continued support in our weekly wrap. Hope you have more great weather and great training. I’m going to go for my 7 miles again this week instead of the 5 on the schedule.

The race organisers have put me in contact with someone & I sent her a check. Once she gets it, she will inform the race organizers that I have her bib number. Hope she gets the check today. Race packet pick up is Friday !

Hope you get your race figured out! You have to have a Dr form to do a race?? I have an old friend like that too and it’s so great when I get the chance to see her.

Yes Deborah, we need a medical certificate for every race. Its always something that surprises American runners. But I think its pretty much like that everywhere in Europe.

There are a ton of races here, you just need to really plan in advance because they sell out pretty quickly… but you also need to like to run with thousands of people. 40 000 this past weekend, 25 000 this coming weekend… you get the picture !

Is a doctor’s certificate something that is typically required in your races? I’ve never heard of that here in the US. It is very nice they will allow you to buy someone else’s bib though. Fingers crossed you will get a spot in the race. It’s wonderful you got to visit with an old friend while you were in the US. Enjoy your week and thanks for linking up with us!

You need a doctor’s certificate for every single race you run in France (and in most of Europe I think). I get one once a year and photo copy it but it has to say “apt to run competitively” or something of the sort. They don’t want to be responsible in case of an accident.

I’ve never done that for a race, but last year I thought I signed up for a breastfeeding conference (I’m certified as a lactation counselor and needed to renew)–I showed up and they had no record of me signing up. Luckily, they made it happen but I felt like I was losing my mind or something! I hope you get to run this one!

Definitely feel like I was losing my mind. So not like me to do something like that.

Bummer about that race, I hope you’re able to still run it. I had that happen earlier this year when I thought my online registration went thru but it didn’t. When we got to the race they had no record of us. Thankfully I was able to signup on site but it was still so stressful.

Definitely stressful. But lucky they have put into place a system where people can sell their bibs…

That is very nice they will try to find a bib for you to buy. That would have driven me bananas. So nice you were able to see your college friend.

I think its great race organizers are matching people who can’t run with people who want a bib. Its a great service.
