Virtual coffee date : May 2015, big news !

I am linking up once again with DeborahCoco and Lynda for this month’s virtual coffee date. So grab a chair and let’s chat !

If we were having coffee, we would definitely talk about running. If you regularly read my blog, its all I have been talking about for the past 2 weeks. I finished my first Half Marathon the beginning of the month. I was really happy with my performance, 2 hours 17 minutes. It was my first official half marathon and didn’t want to push it too much. It went very well and I have been on a runner’s high ever since.

April 12th was the Paris Marathon. I went to the Paris Running Expo on Saturday morning and watched a good part of the race on Sunday. KM 18 of the race is 5 minutes from where I live so I always go cheer on the runners.  I even met Stephanie from Food and Fitness 4 Real who was running her first marathon. She looked so happy and excited ! (photo source : Stephanie)

So the big news is that … I decided to sign up for my first marathon.

This is really big for me as I thought I would NEVER do a marathon, worried about the toll it would take on my joints, knees, etc. I am actually really.really.excited. If all goes well, next year I will be running past km 18 rather than spectating from it.

Over coffee, I would probably talk a a lot about this marathon goal. As I am an obsessive planner and need like to anticipate everything, I have started thinking ahead. Lots to do over the next 12 months ! I think I am going to train with the Run / Walk / Run method by Jeff Galloway. Everything he says resonates with me.

If we were having coffee I would tell you I had a FUN month with guests. We had a Spanish exchange student for a week then my BFF from high school and her family were here for a week. We did some fun things in Paris…. things you rarely do when you live somewhere.

Over coffee, we would chat about teenagers. Spanish, French, American, they are all the same. Mine have been on vacation the past two weeks and we’ve spent quite a bit of time together. Such a great age.

If we were having coffee I would ask you what you have planned for the long weekends in May. Between national holidays and days I am taking off, I am not working a full work week for 5 weeks strait. Keeping fingers crossed that the weather is nice. With my husband are planning on going away one weekend. Love my teenagers, but love time alone with my hubby :

Over coffee we might chat about summer vacation (yes, in France we have a lot of bank holidays and vacation). Any major plans ? Where are you going ? It took us forever to decide where to do, but finally decided on a town near Arcachon in France. It is an area we know well, and like very much.

If we were having coffee I would ask you if you have read Girl on a Train. Everyone was raving about it (careful, spoiler alert) and I didn’t like it at all. I found it slow, very drawn out and the characters had no depth. And I am usually not very critical when it comes to books. Thumbs down.

How was your month ?

Wow! Congratulations on completing your first half marathon AND for signing up for a Full marathon! The Paris marathon no less! I actually saw all of these people posting pictures of it and it got me excited enough to ask my husband if he ever wanted to travel to Paris to run it. 🙂 Good luck with your training. I’m sure you will kick butt! Thanks for the coffee date!

Thanks for stopping by. I just hope next year the conditions will be as perfect as they were this year. But as I run other races in Paris, there is a sense of familiarity, which probably helps my confort level with choosing this race. Not leaping into something completely unchartered.

Oh, I did like Girl on a Train, but there have been other popular books that I didn’t like! All the Paris recaps have made me almost want to do a marathon. Now I know where to stay if I lose my mind and sign up. 😉

I just signed up for my first marathon too…actually two of them sort of by mistake. Ha. I have a lot of work ahead of me in the summer heat. I usually only read when I travel and that book was on my list. Thanks for the heads up! We’ll go to the beach next month but haven’t made plans beyond that. Enjoy your weekend.

Beach sounds nice to me ! Good luck on your first marathon. Will be interesting to follow your training. What kind of training plan have you started / are using ?

CONGRATS on signing up for your first full! So excited!! I can’t believe you signed up so quickly after your first half. After my first half, I was like, “That was great. I might do another one, but I don’t think I’d ever do a full.” A few years later, and I was running 26.2… and now I’m signed up for the Dopey Challenge (48.6). haha!

Ahhh… I think running gets very addictive. I had several injuries from overtraining but learned a lot, so just trying not to overdo it.

OMG!!! Your first marathon!!! I’m so excited for you. I’ve really been struggling over making that same decision. I can’t wait to follow your training and cheer you on! Happy coffee date.

I’m so excited for you that you pulled the plug and registered for a marathon! I used to coach using the Galloway run/walk/run method, and my runners had great success! I even got to do a workshop with Jeff before I started coaching.

Enjoy your time alone with your hubby! 🙂

That’s awesome that you’ve signed up for your first marathon! I have not run a marathon yet but hope to do one soon! I need to go back to Paris for a trip…I went a few years ago and I felt we didn’t have enough time to enjoy it fully. I wish we had more holidays over here!

Congrats Karen on your first 1/2 marathon! I am looking forward to your future posts on training for the marathon! I just came back from a beach vacation and proud that I worked out everyday fast walking on the beach and did not gain a pound during the vacation! Now back to training and better eating for the month of May…my goal is to lose 5lbs this month!

Over coffee, I would suggest reading Trail of Broken Wings by Sejal Badani…I really enjoyed it. I did read Girl on the Train and liked it better as it went on, but definitely not one of my favorites!
