Thinking out loud : running

It has been a busy week because the kids are back to school, my clients are back, and my colleagues are back. The last week in August was a bit calmer but then I hit the ground running (pun intended) September 1st. Despite the craziness, I have continued my exercise and  running. I am trying to stay focused and not get sucked into all the craziness.

Running keeps me sane.

So this week’s Thinking out Loud is dedicated to this addiction of mine. Here are some very random running thoughts.

I have been running for the past 2 months without my iPod. This is literally a first for me. I have been running for about 10 years and have always run with music, so this is a big deal. I love it. I find I am much more in tune to what is going on around  me….

…The smells (lush green bushes, the salty ocean, the freshly cut hay)

… The sounds (runners talking, kids playing, birds singing, dogs barking)

… The feelings (of my feet hitting the ground, of my breathing, of the tight muscles that start to loosen)

…The sights (Paris, Normandy, Arcachon bay, Basque country)

I have absolutely relished these past 2 months sans musique. Not sure if I will go back !

 

My recent find : #ukrunchat / @ukrunchat  : “The number one running community in the UK where runners come to talk about everything to do with running”

I discovered twitter chats recently. UKrunchat has an hour Sunday evening and an hour Wednesday evening. People ask questions to the twitter address and @ukruncat retweets. Then you receive answers to your questions from fellow runners, everyone shares experiences, good ideas, tips & tricks. I have asked and answered questions and find it very enlightening.

Training plans, races, brands, apps, injury, positive reinforcement…. its all there !

I got 2 new running bras. Now, I refuse to post a picture of myself in a bra, but boy, does a new bra feel great. I tried a new brand, Odlo. I got 2 different models, including this one. Loving it.

It is not yet severe, and since I have stopped wearing heels it has gotten better, but still…. it is getting to be more painful. I am a little worried it is going to bother my training.

So that is what is going through my mind at the moment. Any random running thoughts going through your head at the moment ?  Does run chat exist in the US ?

      I am thinking the subjects might come back regularly but I find it a great way to connect with other runners… especially since I don’t (yet) have a running group

    I think with that beautiful scenery, I could run without music too! I just found bras I love from Reebok. They have mesh panels which really helps in the heat. I hope your foot gets better and you won’t be training for your marathon in pain!

      It took me a while to find a bra because I found with a lot of them I could hardly breath… too tight around the chest ! Glad you found one you like.

    Oh no about your foot. I have the worst feet and totally sympathize. I have been doing a few runs without music lately, too and it’s such a nice experience. Although I usually listen to podcasts because I like the company.

      I think I will still use music on long runs else I will probably be really bored. I actually haven’t tried a podcast while running. I think I like the music for background noise and with a pod coast I would need to concentrate….

    Thanks for the ukrunchat-tip, have already added on my Insta – looks good! I also have a starting Hallux Valgus issue on my right foot. Really “irritating” and its very sore and sometimes painful after long runs. I now try to use toe-separator to adjust the position of the joint, and it helps a little I believe. Also try to use wide enough shoes, avoid narrow shoes that is tight around the toe. Am afraid it will cause me running problems at a point…:/

      Me too, afraid it will cause me problems with my running down the road…. I haven’t tried a toe separator yet, but I have definitely gone to wide and flat shoes. No more heels and nothing pointy.
