The Final Countdown

In exactly one week I will be running the NYC marathon. So while this is of course top of mind, life goes on around the race and preparation.  I want to say the past week was not very eventful, but when I re-read my post, I realize how much I actually did.

Fitness

I had a ton of work with several 12 hour days. Nonetheless I managed to get my running in :

  • Monday : Off (& international travel)
  • Tuesday : 20″ walk +  20″ sprint x 25, with 30 minutes running afterwards for a total of 6,5 K
  • Wednesday : sprint day like Tuesday 6,5K total
  • Thursday : full body workout at home, 75 minutes. It.was.hard including a ton of squats, push ups and some HIIT training with burpees & squat jumps. I couldn’t finish the whole thing and stopped after 75 minutes. I was wiped.
  • Friday : Off
  • Saturday : 7 miles (it was nice not to have a long run !)
  • Sunday : Weights at the gym (chest, arms, back, legs)

My running felt great this week. I felt rested, energetic and no knee pain. These runs definitely boosted my confidence for next Sunday.

The race

I spent a ton of time reading about the marathon. I came across this amazing blog post from runningandthecity.com that is extremely detailed. My WordPress won’t link (seriously when is it going to work), but the post title is Tips, strategy & information.

The author writes about probably everything you ever wanted to know about the race. It helped me anticipate strategy. I also spent time thinking about what I would need, making lists, doing laundry, and starting to pack.

We leave on Friday morning with my husband, and I am traveling Tuesday & Wednesday for work, so that doesn’t leave much time.

Life

We wanted to go away this weekend, but my daughter is applying for early admission (Ringling College of Art & Design) and her application needs to be in November 1st. And it wasn’t finished. The counselors here are not used to the US school system so I had to spend a lot of time writing everything they needed to submit. Then I had to look at all the financial aid things. Then she needed to finalize her essay…. and her art portfolio. You get the picture. We did take a break to get nails done and take a walk in the 60 degree weather.

Besides getting my nails done I had my eyebrows waxed. Need to look good in my marathon photos. A girl has priorities!

If you want to follow me for NY, my bib number is 61015. 11:10 a.m. start.

And that is a wrap !

I am linking up with Holly and Tricia at Hoho runs and Misssippipiddlin for their Weekly Wrap.

Any last minute suggestions or advice for the home stretch ?

Any Halloween racing this weekend ?

I don’t think I could fly across the ocean and hen do a marathon 2 days later! But you sound really ready & there’s nothing like a confidence boosting run before your race!

No Halloween racing. I can barely squeeze in runs with all I need to do this week!

EEEK! It’s finally here. You strike me as a pretty calm person, and your post seems to confirm that. But you are ready. I’m so excited for you!

Your daughter is so beautiful! Is she only applying to US schools? Or any French schools?

Yes, I am calm and feeling very grounded at the moment.
My daughter is applying to one US school and a bunch here in France, but French applications are not until spring time. She is trying for early admission in one US school.

I almost jumped into a race this weekend but then decided against it. Good week of training. I finished the book, A Race Like No Other. Great read! I learned a lot too. What day are you planning to go to the expo. I think I’m doing Saturday first thing.

Don’t forget a throw away. It will be chilly at the start but looks like perfect running weather.

    See you on Saturday.

Yes, already packed several throw away clothes. Especially since I HATE being cold, I have several layers planned.

I’m so excited for you! Love how the dark chocolate is as essential as the Passport – or am I reading that into your photo? 😉 I think the Ringling is near-ish my in-laws in Florida – it’s fantastic, but you probably know that already! No killer strength workouts this week, OK? You need to rest those legs!

Yes, the dark chocolate is important. I am bringing lots of snacks and fuel because I think Saturday will be a bit crazy and don’t want to have to run around for things. No killer leg workout this week, promise !

Sounds like you’re ready to go! Woo hoo!! I hope you have safe travels and I know you’ll have a great race!! My only advice is to just trust in your training and know you’ll do just fine. This race is all about the experience, so soak it all in. I would say try to keep your pace even on the bridges, as they’re deceptively difficult. Queensboro Bridge is probably the worst because it’s just so quiet and boring. But once you come off the bridge onto 1st Ave., there is a wall of people screaming and going crazy. You will feel like a rock star and want to run your butt off because you’ll be so pumped from the spectators. There is a gradual incline on 1st Ave, so be careful not to expend too much energy as there’s still quite a way to go from there. This was my favorite part of the race (after the finish, of course) and I’ll never forget that feeling of all those people screaming and cheering on the runners getting off the bridge. You will have a fabulous time!!

The only thing I don’t like about NYC is that late start time. I’m not accustomed to running that late in the day. (I thought 8:25 was bad at Chicago!) I wish you perfect weather and hope you experience all those good “feels” while racing. I’m so excited for you and I’ll be cheering loudly from the southern corner of the US. Thanks for the bib # and for linking, Karen!

11 is SO LATE. And with the time difference it will be like 5 p.m. here in France. At least it will be warmer at that time of day.
