Summer fitness goals

I am linking up with Courtney at Eat Pray Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What, and Mar at Mar on the Run for this week’s Friday Five, which is a fitness related theme.


School is out. The days are long and bright. Flowers are blooming. Work is slower. Vacation is in the air.

I LOVE this time of the year.

And at the same time, this week marked Week 1 of NYC Marathon training, my second marathon of the year. That in itself doesn’t make the summer as typical as it usually is.

So here are my fitness goals, to stay focused through the next two months with so many temptations  thrown my way :

1.Be faithful to my training plan, with 3 or 4 days of running per week. Week 1 has been successful.

2. Keep planking and doing pushups, at least 4 days a week. This challenge with started back in May and there has been some healthy competition and mutual motivation surrounding it. I want to keep it up.


3. Add in one day of cross training / weight lifting / swimming. Because this woman needs more than just running in her life.

4. Limit the ice cream and rosé wine, which definitely represent summer. This will probably be the hardest thing on my list to do!


5. Add some speed and hill work.  I have had some downtime so I need to get my mileage up, then start adding in speed. This is the one thing that I didn’t focus a lot on during my first marathon, which I want more focus on this time around.


Its going to be a great summer ! NYC I’m coming for you !

    Yes, the planking will still continue! Even tho I think we’re squatting now…

    I too have trouble with wine and ice cream in the summer. Not together, of course!

      LOL. No wine and ice-cream together I agree.
      I missed the squat thing… not sure I can do planking + push ups +squats. Too much pressure !

    That’s a great photo in Central Park! I’ve heard that you can really focus on hills and the speed will come along with that, so I you have to choose, opt for hills — although I think sprint intervals are more fun. 😛

      I actually LIKE hill repeats, better than speed. Hills over speed any day ! Maybe I will follow your advice and favor the hills….

    I like to get in more strength training in the summer, too. I really wish I could swim year round. And I’d love to drop those last 5 pounds but I also have to eat better than I have been lately!

    Have you tried banana soft serve? Just blending a frozen, ripe banana? It’s not ice cream, but it sure tastes good. Lately I’ve been adding some chocolate PB2 (no idea if you can get that in France, but I could bring some to NYC next time if you wanted to give it a try) — it makes a really satisfying dessert & it’s actually pretty good for you!

      I would like to drop those last 5 pounds too but I am enjoying the wine and dessert too much ! Maybe now that I am training I will cut back a little bit. I do blend a banana once in a while, it is a great idea. Going to go do it now so it will be nice and creamy and cold later.

    ha ha ha …the planking will NEVER stop! I actually like summer running. The heat/humidity slows me down (sometimes), but I love being outside 😉

    All the best with NYCM training! I’ll live vicariously through you. Actually Indy Monumental marathon training starts Monday for me. I haven’t even looked at my plan yet. I love this time of year as well and wish it would last longer.

    Good luck with your NYC training! I counted today as the official start of my training for my fall half. I’m hoping to stay consistent but man is it hot!

    A blogger I follow posted a mini July fitness challenge. I plan to adapt it a bit to fit in with my other workouts, but I’m excited to mix up my routine some!

    I need to lose some weight, but I am struggling a bit with the restraint. It is much more fun to drink wine and some yummies!

      I find I can only focus on one thing at at time. And now it will be training. The rest is important but I try not to put too much pressure on myself.

    It’s so exciting that you’re now in marathon training mode again! I think it’s great that you’re thinking of adding speed work in this time around, now that the mystery of the marathon is behind you and you know what to expect.
