Staying sane

November 6th is just around the corner. I have no idea how that happened. I am getting ?*#!! excited. Not only to run the race, but to spend 6 full days with my husband. Things around here have been i.n.s.a.n.e.

Random things I did this week :

  1. My last long run with intervals of this training cycle was on Saturday. 12 x 1 mile repeats on the plan @ marathon pace (10:15). I walk about 4 minutes in between each. I nailed 7 of them, came pretty close on 3, and 2 were about 30 second longer. All in all I was pretty happy and was blessed with perfect fall weather for most of the run.20161022_125642
  2. I complained about my GPS watch recently (not linking to the satellite) but I am happy to announce that after some trouble shooting, I seemed to have solved the problem. I didn’t know this but I am supposed to update the GPS satellite information before every single run. So far, no more problems. #saved300bucks too !
  3. I got in 3 other workouts : one hour of sprints / cardio at the gym on the bike Monday, a one hour leg workout Wednesday, and 45 minute upper body workout Sunday.20161020_080010
  4. Point 3 is very surprising because it was my busiest week of the year at work.
  5. Helped my daughter with her college application.
  6. Helped my niece with her resume and cover letter in English.
  7. Visited a very sick friend in the hospital. 🙁
  8. Finished some important administrative things that had been hanging over my head, but with deadlines looming, I could no longer wait.
  9. Tried a new, gluten free recipe, with chick peas, chorizo & bacon. Here, I added it to some spaghetti squash and scallops. Might sound like a weird combination but after 15 miles of running, I was hungry. SO yummy !20161022_135005
  10. Watched the 3rd episode of Westworld. Loving it.
  11. Got my haircut and loved the color but kind of freaked out at the cut. My stylist likes to “evolve” my cut. We’ll see.
  12. Tried GU. (Note to my parents :  it is an energy gel) After a recent post by Marcia, I promised myself to try it. So I bought 3 flavors and tried the peanut butter flavor during my long run Saturday. The jury is still out. I felt like it was a sugar shock to my system and not sure if I saw any benefit.

Here is what I didn’t do :

  1. Didn’t get as much sleep as I would have liked.
  2. Didn’t eat as well as I would have liked
  3. Didn’t clean the house for 6 days.
  4. Didn’t eat dinner with my husband, except once.
  5. Didn’t write a blog post, nor go on social media.
  6. Didn’t fold nor iron the laundry that is in a heap on a chair in my living room

I will be in Switzerland for work on Monday, then the rest of the week should be back to normal, before 2 weeks of travel starting November 1st.

And that is a wrap !

    I relate to all your didn’t do list. You did great getting your work outs in! and that’ll is strength in the bank for your race 🙂 It is important right now! You will have time to chill after the race, which will feel nice.
    That is good you got your watch working.

      Writing the didn’t do list was kind of liberating. NOT fitting is all is is OK.

    Sounds like you are ready for NYCM! I was fairly unplugged on social media this week as well and it was nice! I feel like Today’s GU flavors on my 13 miler were vanilla and salted caramel. Both get a thumbs up. I feel like they keep me from hitting the wall but I must wash them down with lots of water.

      I am thinking of trying a couple other GUs before the race, but not sure…. people seem to love or hate them. I know you love them ! And salted caramel is mentioned by lots of people.

    Glad you figured out your GPS. I am not a fan of GU. I like the Gatorade chews though – they are sort of like big soft gummy bears. I only do laundry once a week and if it doesn’t get put away I just pick out what I need as the week goes on!

    That’s good news about your GPS! It’s so annoying when the GPS will not connect and all you want to do is run!

    I can’t believe we’ll be running in the marathon in 2 weeks! I’ll be at the Expo on Thursday night and running the dash to the finish line 5k on Saturday. Maybe we’ll run into each other at some point! 🙂

      I will be at the expo Saturday morning… not running the 5K, taking a bus tour of the marathon route. Kind of cheesy but I thought my husband would enjoy it. I am in Coral Orange A. And you ?

    I was on enforced tech vacation last week. There’s basically no cell reception at my parents’ new home. And they couldn’t remember their internet login, so nothing. Nada.

    Don’t even talk to me about the state of the house or laundry. I didn’t even have time to completely unpack from our previous trip — I did many loads of laundry, but since a lot of it was summer clothes and it’s definitely not summer here now, I just left them. I only had one day.

    I do like GU, but barely ever use it for races. I don’t like sweets during a long run! Bizarre, right? But I do like caffeine in a race. I use caffeinated m&ms basically & whether or not it’s a placebo, it seems to help me.

    Sounds like you were busy! Great job with your training! Nice you didn’t have to buy a new GPS watch! GU is ok and I usually get it with caffeine. I usually get the berry GU.

    Gu gels used to be my go-to…but the past 18 months or so,my tummy revolts. I always liked the tri-berry and salted caramel (when I was using them). I’ve been using Honey Stinger gels lately, and they are working alright (made from honey, so a tad bit more “natural”)….I think I was not using enough water with the Gu’s, but they also have a thicker consistency, and I almost gagged when I ate one a month ago or so. Fueling is SUCH a personal thing. Your big day is almost here!!!!

    I like Gu, but only before a run. I take is about 15 minutes before the start. The consistency is too thick for me to use during a run. The chocolate flavors are pretty good (and I’m not a choco-holic so that says a lot!).

    OMG I know your getting excited, I am too for you! I can’t wait to see how it goes for you in NYC! You did have a very busy week and you got a lot done.
    I do like GU, favorite is Chocolate Outrage with caffeine. It just works for me. I try other things but i keep coming back to it. I can tell a difference.
    They are thick but most times unless its really hot I can get them down fine. It may take me a bit. I think of them as my dessert or treat in my run.

    It’s wonderful you figured out what was wrong with your watch and didn’t have to spend any money. I like GU without caffeine. Peanut Butter is one of my favorites! I need that sugar (carbs). But, thankfully, I never have tummy issues either. I know you are excited (and going taper crazy) about the race and trip with your husband. You have worked so hard and I can’t wait to see it pay off on race day! Thanks for linking, Karen!
