Runfessions : Pet peeves

I am linking up with Marcia at Marcia’s Healthy Slice for the first Runfession of 2016 and since the Friday Five theme is of my choice this week, I also am linking up with Courtney at Eat Pray Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What, and Mar at Mar on the Run.

As much as I love running there are things that irk me immensely. So here it is, getting it all off my chest :

  1. Running pants that  bag around the ankles. I am short and I have skinny legs but a thicker waist, so I usually get a size medium pants. They fit perfectly in the waist but tend to bag by the end of a run.

2. My gps watch that refuses to pick up a signal.  I will wait up to 2 minutes, but beyond that, I don’t have the patience. I have found a corner where it will pick up the signal 9 times out of 10, but its not fool proof. I usually wear my fitbit, just in case, which allows me to judge distance.

My GPS corner :

3. Watering eyes. I get this from my dad… as soon as there is the slightest wind or it is a bit cold, my right eye will run (pun intended) the whole time.

4. Foggy or wet glasses.

5. Socks. I have yet to find a running sock AFTER 10 YEARS that I love. I am currently wearing Feetures but now that I have washed them a couple times they are tight, they pull at my toenails and the part around my Achilles can be bothersome. They are great when they are new but 6 months later ? I am ready to throw them out. Maybe I need a bigger size ?

And if I have a run when it is cold and rainy, which means I can not see, my eyes are watering and my pants are heavy with water around my ankles ? Yeah, that pretty much sums up the worst.run.ever.

Can you make a sock recommendation for me ?

I can especially relate to #2… that drives me CRAZY! And, to avoid #4, I wear contacts when I run!

I can not wear contacts anymore so I will just have to suffer ! (or avoid the rain preferably)

Once I bought a pair of socks online that happened to run small – bugged me, too! Watering eyes are common for me on cool runs. I hope no one ever thinks I’m crying – they water so much!

I always make sure I have waterproof mascara. I have gotten home a couple times to see black make up all around my eyes. Not cool.

I haven’t found any socks that I totally love. I am wearing feetures now too but don’t see what all the big fuss is about!! Good luck.

I actually have pretty long legs so my issue is always being too short….let’s not talk about the booty and tights not staying up…..uuugh!

    • Karen - Fit in France February 27, 2016 at 7:40 am Reply

Glad I am the only one not understanding the features fuss. Seriously loved them until I washed them 3 times. And I never put them in the dryer ! 🙁

I never would’ve guessed you were little! You seem so tall on the internet! : )
My eyes water like crazy when it’s cold. I tried many brands of socks and none were great until I found Balega. True love! Thanks for linking up!

I haaaaaaaaaaaaate when my GPS doesn’t pick up a signal! It doesn’t happen much, but when it does, it really kills my mojo.

    • Karen - Fit in France February 27, 2016 at 7:38 am Reply

Luckily it has never happened in a race but I am going to be severely pissed the day it does

I so feel you on the glasses! I hate contacts but I have started wearing them because I hate foggy glasses even more!

Socks I love SmartWool and Fitsok!

I will check out the socks brands. I didn’t know smart wool made running socks… I can’t wear contacts….actually because I have dry eyes, which is completely ridiculous because they water when I run.

Not only do I hate when the GPS wont load why is my distance different than the person I am running with?

Seriously ? Once in a while mine is off a bit with a course by never by much. Yeah, that would irk me big time !

  9. Kelli February 27, 2016 at 2:43 pm Reply

Great list! And that GPS lock thing irritates me, too! I understand reception issues in an area with tall buildings or lots of tree cover, but I live out in the open and it is winter! And I have the eye watering thing going on too. Even with sunglasses on my eyes water on the bike in the cold.

On my long run today I went to 5 different spots to try to pick up the signal. I gave up !

  10. Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy February 27, 2016 at 3:02 pm Reply

Have you ever tried contacts? I HATE wearing my glasses to run in, and very, very rarely do it.

I have the opposite problem — small waist, large thighs. So the problem is always to find a waist that fits (although the new continuous drawcords are quite helpful).

I do like feetures. And Balega. My guess is you do need to go up a size — I got a size L Balega in one of the challenges I signed up for last year, and while I usually wear a M (big feet for a little girl), the L fit perfectly fine.

Several people have recommended Balega, I think I will try them. I wore contacts a long time ago but I have really dry eyes (except when running LOL) so can not wear them. Contacts literally stick to my eyeball !

  11. Jenn @ Run With Sole February 28, 2016 at 1:59 am Reply

I love Balega socks. They don’t pull on anything and they feel super comfy. But maybe trying a different size will help too. Running pants, in general, are annoying. I don’t like the kind that kind of flare out at the bottom because then when you’re running, they flap. And all the cold air flows up the pant leg. Very annoying. #runnerproblems 🙂

Definitely going to try the Balega, thanks. And I don’t buy flare leg any more either because of the flapping !

Wow! I can’t imagine running in the snow or rain! Kudos to you to still pushing it through. I can imagine it being bothersome with glasses though! My glasses never move much when I run thank goodness, but I’ve had a lot of people tell me how annoying they find it to workout or run in glasses! I also have issues with gps when I run! Especially for when I use specific apps on my phone. Fun reading your runfessions!

I actually don’t mind my glasses, and luckily my schedule is flexible enough so that I can usually avoid days where it rains.

  13. Karen February 29, 2016 at 7:36 pm Reply

I have some socks I order a larger size if I can get it. Sometimes the standard sock size squeezes my toes…I wear and 8 or 81/2 shoe.
My GPS has been finicky lately… it never used to take long, but lately it is killing me.

  14. Sonia February 29, 2016 at 8:17 pm Reply

I like Swiftwick socks because they’re thin. I have the same problem with leggings and knee high socks that end up going to my thighs. Short leg problems!

I will check out Swiftwick, you are not the first person to mention that. And yes, you are right about knee highs, which is why I don’t buy them.

I’ve gone through so many loves and not loves with running socks.
My favorites that I have found are the brand Balega, they stay true to fit in the wash, (but I never put running socks in the dryer, it ruins the threads in them.)
They also never get holes, I’ve had the same 3 pairs I rotate for about 4 years and they look nearly as good now as they did when I first bought them. Plus, they don’t move on me, no blisters ever.
Granted not every sock is good for every person. When I am finding new brands, I buy 1 pair of a few different then once I find the ones that work, I like to go back and buy as many as I can for future use:) Good luck in your running sock hunt for a good pair!

Definitely going to try the Balega, so many people recommended them. And I never put them in the dryer, but I think even the washing machine is too harsh on them.

Swiftwick socks. Love them. I’m not a big fan of Feetures — they’ve given me blisters before. It would drive my nuts if my pants bagged around the ankles. How can you deal with that? Or the foggy glasses. You are tough!

For the beggy pants I spend my run yanking them up. So annoying ! I usually get capris but for the winter runs which can be cold I invested in long pants. I will check out swiftwick, thanks !
