Racing weight

This is not a weight loss blog, but a healthy living blog. I have never talked about my weight (until today !). I do not diet because I do not believe in food restriction, crazy weight loss plans, nor a miracle solution. I feel that weight can be managed long term with a healthy life style.

So why talk about my weight today ?

My current eating habits are not where I would like them to be. They could be defined as 60% healthy / 40% “less healthy / indulgence”.

And this has shown up on the scale. I have gained weight, 10 pounds over the past 3 years. 10 pounds is a lot on a 5 foot 2 inch frame, especially when it all goes to my middle / back / chest.

10 pounds means all my pants are tight. It means if I want to be comfortable, I need to wear a dress… anything that is not snug around the middle. It means I went up a pant size. It means all my summer dresses / tops are too tight across the upper back / breast area. Living with clothes which are tight is not comfortable.

I am not overweight, but that doesn’t mean I feel physically good about myself.

So what have I decided to do about it ?

As I said before, dieting does not work for me. But that doesn’t mean I can not tweak my diet. My weight gain is in large part due to overeating (because of stress, difficulty managing my appetite while traveling, and too many indulgences).

Because my marathon training starts beginning of October, everyone / all the literature says do not loose weight while training, I have decided to try and loose weight before training starts.

My objective ?

I want to loose fat.

I want to loose 5 to 8 pounds of fat for improved physical performance that will help me be a better runner.

How ?

More specifically, I am going to  :

  1. Be more mindful about what I eat, what I am feeling before eating and how I feel as I eat, when I feel full
  2. Reduce portion sizes / number of indulgences
  3. Plan for temptations
  4. Up my strength training

As with any goal, measuring progress is important. I have a scale but hardly ever use it anymore (maybe this is correlated to my weight gain ?). But I know that I have put on muscle over the years and want to be sure if I lose weight, I am losing fat and not muscle. So I bought a scale that measures BMI.

So there it is ! Its out there ! I am embarking on a minor weight loss journey. The timing is right and I am convinced it can only help my running.

What are your thoughts on weight loss ? What one thing has helped you ?

I don’t believe in restricting food either and have never dieted. I don’t usually talk about that because so many people struggle with their weight and I don’t want to seem insensitive. When a few pounds creep on (like now), I can usually get them off by cutting out my bedtime snack and reducing portion sizes. You don’t look like you are carrying 10 extra pounds!

Weight is a very sensitive topic and lots of people struggle. But I wanted to keep things real so I put it out there. Reducing portions & cutting out snacks sounds reasonable to me !

It is easy to let things slide a little while on vacation isn’t it? I like to use Sept as a kind of reset of sorts for myself each year.

I completely took advantage of everything on vacation, with no guilt. But now, need to get back on track ! Reset is a perfect description.

I can so relate to this and I too am only 5’1 (You don’t look as short as me, though lol) I carry my excess weight mostly in my hips and thighs. I can tell since I’ve started strength training back in April I have added muscle but the excess is still there 🙁 I do know that to control this I must do it through eating. I tend to do pretty good but if I could only find the balance where I could enjoy the things I want to eat but not go overboard. Its really difficult when you go out to eat and your husband pays dearly for your meal and you know you shouldn’t eat it all but you also don’t want to seem ungrateful ! Realistically my family eats out a lot I can not just avoid going out to eat. I’m starting marathon training in September and I know if I could loose even 5lbs it would help me. We will see. Thanks for this post I’m glad we can both relate to this problem.

I think it is something a lot of us struggle with…. didn’t know you started marathon training in Sept. It will be interesting to follow the same timing (almost) as mine.
