I am a one night stand racer

I am linking up with Marcia at Marcia’s Healthy Slice, Erika at MCM Mama runs and Patty at My no guilt life for Tuesdays on the run where today’s topic is racing : one and done or the same one over and over.

If I look back at my racing history, I am a definitely a one and done gal.  There are several reasons to this :

  • I have a love / hate relationship with racing. I go through bouts where I will do several, and then I won’t do any for months.
  • From one year to the next my motivation, objectives and preferred race distance vary. This year is the year of marathons. Last year I did a bit of everything. A few years ago ? 5K.
  • I like variety. New towns, new routes, varied distances. Yeah, I bore quickly.
  • My schedule is always crazy. Between my daughter’s activities, weddings, long weekends, travel….life often dictates which races I run, depending on what’s available.
  • I like big races, and I can not always plan ahead, so I tend to miss registration deadlines. My next big race is June 19th, around Versailles. I have never done it, but thought it would be great to run in and around the Versailles gardens and near the chateau. I signed up a long time ago, and luckily we are around that weekend, even though it will be crazier than planned because I have family coming to Paris.

All past year one night stands :

I have only done 3 races more than once :

  • Races which start 5 minutes from my house. In addition to seeking variety, I am very pragmatic = no need to drive, park, and packet pick up can’t be any easier. There is one in February and one in June which I usually do. But not always. I didn’t do the one in February of this year, and I am not planning on the one in June either as I think it is the same weekend as my Versailles race.
  • I do La Parisienne 6,7K every year, but that is because I do it with my colleagues so it is more about the conviviality.

Maybe if I find the perfect race I would do it every year, but races often sell out and I can’t plan 6 months ahead of the date, else I end up signing up and not going because my schedule has changed. So, for the time being, my one night stand behavior it will be.

What about you ? What is your preference ?

One night stands- love it. I tend to race the same ones because they’re local and it fits but I like to try new ones.

Yes, race on Sunday then crazy week of travel immediately after that.. Barcelona and NY. I must be nuts.

  4. This year I am trying to check some new races that I have not done yet. I do have a few favorites that I keep going back to as well.

It always depends on what your objective is… I get bored so I like looking for new races. You must have so many to chose from.

There are so many great races out there that I love to do new ones and travel to new place. I visited Versailles before and it was beautiful. I bet that will be a great course.

I think it will be great. I ran a half at Fontainbleau but Versailles is so much bigger and nicer !

I prefer trying new races since there are SO MANY to choose from! Your upcoming race in Versailles sounds awesome, I would love to run there one day! Repeat races for me are usually for sentimental reasons.

We are lucky we live near places that have such a variety of races.

Run around Versailles!? Je suis tellement jalouse.

I repeat my local favorites but for longer races, there are so many that I usually don’t repeat.

It would be interesting if you did a post sometime summarizing what you like and don’t like about all the races you do. With your experience I am sure you could write a book !
And your French is always great !

I am just not that competitive… I race for fun and for the atmosphere. But if I have to drive, park, plan, lose a half a day… it gets to the point where it is not fun.

I like big races too, and it’s so difficult to know if a race will work out when you have to sign up as far as 8 months in advance. Your race around Versailles should be beautiful though!!

    • Karen - Fit in France May 17, 2016 at 10:01 pm Reply

I am hoping we have nice weather for Versailles. It is rare that there is a race there, I think this is the only one they do. I’m excited !

Oh man. I want to run that Versailles race! And I would also do races that are right outside my house. I think having one night stands with races is ok 🙂

Nothing better than walking 5 minutes to the race start !

It’s definitely easier to do races more than once when they are close to home. I think it’s fun to try new races! The Versailles race sounds awesome!

I go both ways. It just depends on the race.
There are a few marathons through the years that I have traveled for and while I enjoyed them at the time, I doubt I would go back for the same race. Then again there are others that I would love to go back and run each year if I could.
Must say the Versailles race sounds amazing!!!

    • Karen - Fit in France May 18, 2016 at 10:33 pm Reply

Versailles will be fun. I am looking forward to it.

Haha, I used to be a one night stand kind of gal but I’ve done a few repeats! Chicago is one of those races I could do over and over…it’s like an old shoe but it always is a different experience. But Big Sur? I don’t know that I’d want to do it again–it was such an amazing experience and I don’t want to ruin the memory with the sequel.

Yes, I get it about Big Sur and goal races. I think it is the same with travel. The first time around was so great that the second and third time rarely live up to the expectation and experience of the first time.
