Goals : Looking back on 2016 & forward

I am linking up with Marcia at Marcia’s Healthy Slice, Erika at MCM Mama runs and Patty at My no guilt life for Tuesdays on the run, where this week’s topic is wrapping up the year.

2016 was very good to me. I had some pretty big goals set for this past year, and am very happy with what I accomplished :

  • Run my first marathon. Ran my first (Paris) and second (New York). Definitely my biggest accomplishments of the year.with-jean-statue-lib
  • Run one race per month. I quickly let go of this, as it was not compatible with my training and work travel.
  • Reduce my waistline by 2 inches and loose 5 pounds. Nailed this goal too. I started working with Amanda Tress in August and so far have lost well over 2 inches around my waist and over 5 pounds. I am still going strong.
  • Give my blog a face lift. I met with someone over the summer to discuss this topic, but in the meantime I have decided to take a blogging break come January 2017 for a while, so I put this on hold.
  • Visit 2 cities in Europe that I have not yet been to. We went to Rome in May (read about it here and here). Rome is amazing, almost as great as Paris. 🙂 We also went to Crete, Greece. LOVED IT.20160503_104340
  • Save money for a big, family vacation in 2017. Greece turned out to be our big vacation, as we celebrated our 20 year wedding anniversary.20160730_145423

Goals for 2017 :

  1. Spend (more) time with family. My eldest will be going off to college next fall and that means a busy year. Schools, applications, end of year baccalaureate test, decisions, decisions, decisions. I need and want to be present – with physical and mental availability- during this time of her life.
  2. Try a new sport. Last year  was very significant for me & my running. I ran two marathons, and I am not ready to sign up for another one (yet?). But I am a goal oriented person, so I am floating a bit trying to determine my next objective. I will continue to run but because I want to spend more time with family, I am signing up for golf lessons with my husband this spring / summer. I am the black sheep of the family when it comes to golfing, so I figured I would give it a serious try.
  3. Get my finances in order. Not that they need it, but with one daughter going off to college, and possibly to the US, that is going to require some serious financial planning / re-thinking. Schools are so much more expensive in the US, and she was accepted at her dream school, so we are seriously looking at how to make it happen.
  4. Running. Yes, I will continue to run, though have set my sights on shorter distances. 6 races are my goal. And I need to put this to work :20161225_104514-01
  5. Nutrition. I want to continue to learn about what works for my body and what doesn’t. Since working with Amanda Tress, I have learned a great deal, but as I edge towards the half century mark, I want to continue to find balance between fueling my body correctly and being able to enjoy that glass of wine or great dessert. I will continue to track my macros for a while.screenshot_20161221-205227-01

No major house project. No major trip planned. Just enjoying what I have. The 2017 milestones and accomplishments will be different than this year, but I am 100% OK with that.

What one goal did you accomplish in 2016 ? Happy with your year ?

What is one of your 2017 goals ?

I think your year was great! You didn’t just tackle your first marathon, but kept your momentum and conquered another in November…IMPRESSIVE!! I have Grandma’s Marathon on the calendar (mid-June), but am debating about doing another one in the fall….decision, decisions LOL

I don’t think a marathon is on my list in 2017. I am not feeling the motivation to train…. good luck to you, I look forward to following your adventures again.

I haven’t even begun to think about 2017 goals yet! I would like to add another 3 states, and have some idea of what they will be (but it’s still up for negotiation).

I think golfing is a great idea. It’s always nice to do something with the hubby. Is it as expensive over there as it is here?

Here’s to a very happy 2017, Karen (and thinking of & praying for your family, often).

Congrats on smashing your goals! Two marathons -wow! For 2017, I need to work on nutrition. More fruits & veggies, less cupcakes.

    • Karen - Fit in France December 28, 2016 at 8:27 am Reply

LOL. No cupcakes here in Paris, but lots of other goodies that are part of my diet. Which is also why I run ! 🙂

Karen I love reading your blog – it’s fun to feel like I have a friend in Paris. How exciting for your daughter! I feel similarly about not necessarily needing any big goals. While I have some goals of course, it’s nothing crazy or huge – and that’s okay. 🙂

      Aw, thank you Courtney !
You had some major accomplishments this year, I am sure you will have a great 2017 too.

I think 2 marathons in one year is amazing! Kudos to you.

I did take up golf, took lessons and got all the equipment. I found that I didn’t have enough time to practice & play with running & work so I put it on hold.

Maybe some day when I retire. But I thought it was very hard!! Good luck to you.

I am looking forward to trying it and to spending time with my husband.

Great goals and even greater accomplishments! Congrats on the two marathons! We visited Rome, Positano and Venice a few years back and absolutely loved it! After 3 full days in Rome, I felt like we hadn’t even begun to see it all …we must go back. Greece is also on my list of overseas travel.

You are wise to take some time off to focus on family! My middle soon is in his freshman year of college and it was very time consuming getting him through that process …I can only imagine how much more difficult it must be for you guys dealing internationally with schools! Best of luck to your daughter and warm wishes for a wonderful 2017!

We LOVED both Rome and Greece. I have lived here over 20 years and hadn’t visited either.

I’m trying to get on the blogging train and you’re talking about taking a break!! I’m hoping to find a direction for my blog other than race recaps.

Congrats on a great 2016 and props to having a plan for 2017. I wish i had a plan, but I’ll probably just wing it!!

I hope you have a great week!!

Enjoy the blogging. I loved it, and you get out of it what you put into it. I just needed a break.

Great year! Two marathons in a year is impressive. My older son is a bit younger than your daughter, but I’m already starting to feel the pressure of the financial decisions that will need to be made in a few years. Congrats to her for getting into her dream school! Sounds like 2017 will be an interesting year for you.

Great job on those goals! It made sense to let go of the running a race every month goal if it wasn’t compatible with the marathon training. Working on my finances and saving more is a big goal for me next year too.
