Friday Five : Weird Race Day Habits

How was your week ? Today is Labor Day in France, so we have a three day weekend, yeah !Although it is supposed to rain… boo.

This week’s Friday Five theme is Race day, so I decided to blog about my quirks and weird habits. Be sure to check out the link up hosts : Courtney at Eat Pray Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What and Mar at Mar on the Run.

1. I am a weather stalker. I saw this phrase recently and it describes me 100%. I start checking the weather 10 days before a race and check it several times a day, up until race day morning.

2. I have been known not to race if it rains. I HATE running in the rain. I race to have fun. I like the atmosphere and the feeling of camaraderie.  (This probably explains why I am a weather stalker !) This was from a year ago :

Rain before a race

Luckily I was running with my brother in law, or I might have not raced ! This is my drowned rat look :

3. Even if I check the weather I agonize over what to wear. I am so afraid of being cold, but also hate carrying extra layers if it gets too hot.

4. This might be TMI, but if you have to go, you have to go. If the porta potty lines are too long, I will find another solution. Enough said.

5. I like to know where I am going and what to expect. So I also obsessively review the race map… before I sign up, before I go to the race, when I get to the race. I like to know if there are hills, if we will be running on asphalt or through the woods … it helps me plan my race strategy.

Having said all this, I bit the bullet and signed up for the Paris Marathon 2016. I was inspired, excited and motivated by all these runners / race recaps. And yes ! I have checked out the race route, but its a little early to start checking the weather or thinking about what to wear.

What quirky race day habits do you have ?

I never look at the course map before races. I don’t like to set myself up for disappointment if it looks challenging. I also hate running in the rain!

I hate it even more when it is rain + cold weather. That is the worse… and I have run several runs like that. Not fun.

I’m the same way with obsessing about race day weather and the course map. I also over-analyze elevation charts.

How cool that you’re signed up for the Paris Marathon! It’s on my bucket list.

I don’t worry too much about hills, its more the asphalt / trails that I like to anticipate.

#4, yep! That’s part of the reason why I love triathlon…very easy to go at the start and then you’re wet the rest of the race so if you go again while you’re running no one notices (especially if you dump water over your head at the aid station at the same time)

LOL. But hey, when nature calls….

Believe it or not I don’t obsess about the weather, but I do obsess about my clothing choices the night before 🙂 I usually don’t look at the race course before hand, if I do I have a tendency to stress if it’s too hilly or the course sucks. LOL. Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks Sue ! I don’t mind hills but I like some of the race to go through woods or on trails if at all possible so I know how to manage my pace. Running fast on 100% asphalt has a tendency to kill my knees.

    Great list!!

    Weather stalker!! Yes-me too!!

My 1st half this year it was rainy and cold-i almost didn’t run but then thought about all the time and money spent so I sucked it up but I HATED every minute of it!! Uuuugh!

What to wear is so hard especially in the early months of spring when the weather can be a bit unpredictable!

Gotta go…gotta go!! At my last race, I flirted with a coach bus driver to let me use the bathroom on his bus. #noshame

#noshame LOL. I call that being resourceful and solution oriented !

I think I am as type-A about all this as you are! I will run in light rain – I prefer that to blazing sun …

Light rain works. Rain and 40 degree weather does not. That would be the worst conditions I could run in…

I know what you mean about the weather and what to wear! I haven’t had a race in the rain yet, but I think that could be a fun time, unless I’m shooting for a PR!

Wet sneakers, wind, damp…. nah. Not my idea of fun. But of course we don’t always have a choice !

It’s so weird that I stalk the weather because I know I’m going to run, no matter what! I guess I want to try to prepare myself, mentally, for what I’m going to have to endure – ha! Thanks so much and I hope you have a great weekend!

Its not like we can change the weather… not sure why I stalk it either.

  9. Jenny @ TurtleStride May 1, 2015 at 5:36 pm Reply

I never check out the course map. I’ll race in the rain but snow is a different story…

    • Karen - French Inspiration May 1, 2015 at 6:06 pm Reply

I wear glasses and maybe that is one reason I don’t like the rain. I can’t see well !

i read about a lot of people finding alternate solutions for bathroom breaks during the paris marathon 🙂

Never had to find a solution during a race, but before the race, I can be creative if I need to be !

Ha ha, I can totally relate to so many of these! I’m a weather stalker and I obsess over the race route too!

I obsessed over course maps as well 🙂 I like to know when I’ll turn, when there is a hill, and when to expect water.
