Friday Five : Five Fitness Truths

Its Friday again, yeah !

Fitness truth 1 :  I prefer to workout by myself

Exercising is probably the only time I have to be alone. The week is so busy between managing work and home and I am constantly surrounded by people. Exercising alone is one of the moments I get to zone out and listen to music, do things at my pace, and process my thoughts. The only person I really like working out with is my dad,  when we do long walks together, or my mother when I am on vacation.

Fitness truth 2 : I always do a dynamic warm up but afterwards stretching is random

I suffered from shin splints a few years ago and my podiatrist insisted on the importance of both dynamic warm up and stretching, but sometimes I just don’t feel like it.

Fitness truth 3 : I HATE running in the rain

I love running, but hate being soaking wet. The only time I ever run in the rain is if I have a race, which has happened several times, including the Apple Pear Road race 2 weeks ago ! Otherwise, you will NEVER see me running when it rains, even if it sprinkles.

Fitness truth 4 : If in a class, I always stand at the front

  • I have hard time hearing when there is a lot of background noise
  • I am a perfectionist and am concerned about my form, so I like to observe the instructor up close.
  • I also like looking in the mirror

 

Fitness truth 5 : I almost quit my job to be a yoga instructor

I did yoga for many years and loved it. I was at a point in my life questioning why I was working in a corporate environnement, what was the purpose of life, etc. To become a yoga instructor in France, it is a 3 or 4 year training program. So I signed up for one, which included 3 hours a week, one weekend a month, and one to two weeks a year… of both classes (anatomy, history) but also practice. I loved it but with a full time job I just could not handle the workload.

What is one of your fitness truths ? Do you mind running in the rain ? Do you prefer to workout alone or with others ?

    Oh I am so with you on #1. I don’t mind group classes, etc but working out / running is my thing and I prefer to do it on my own.

      Sometimes we just need that alone time. Maybe if I found someone who ran exactly the same pace I do it might be different, but as my mood changes every time, I don’t want to have to think about that other person… are we going too fast, too slow, is she tired…

    Visiting from the Friday 5, a day late! Running in the rain isn’t tht bad unless it’s very cold rain. Running with others is okay but I like doing other workouts solo!

    I am totally with you on #1 and #3!!

    But I really want to find a running friend or group, I think it would help me to run with others occasionally, plus it would get me outside more – 99+% of my runs are on my treadmill (which I LOVE).

    I’ve only run in the rain at races. Many years ago I ran a 5k which was once of my very first races. I didn’t mind my body being wet, it was my feet….the squish squish was so annoying in sound and feel, and I worried about blisters. My other was a marathon where it drizzled on and off and was chilly – and I got injured and should have dropped. Not fun. I won’t train in the rain and probably would DNS most races (not all of them, depends) if it was raining.

    I’ve just added dynamic warmups, which I am liking. I used to be quite good at post-run stretching, but as my morning workouts are followed by my immediate need to get to work, I often let it slip. Gotta get back on that.

      I hate squishy feet too, but most of all being cold. I did a 20K where I waited an hour in the cold rain, then ran 2+ hours, then it took me one hour to get out of the whole race area. In the pouring rain and cold. It took me four months for my joints to recuperate !

    I’m with you on 1 and 4. I like to workout by myself and if I happen to be with someone, we don’t do much talking! And I stand in front during class too! It’s not like I think I’m great, I just like to watch my form. I’m totally opposite of you on #2. My dynamic stretching is spotty but I will stretch afterwards.

    I agree with many of these, except #5! I am mostly a fair weather runner, but I don’t mind a light drizzle.

    I like to stand in the front too! I can’t see in the back! It’s annoying! I usually work out alone although I don’t mind working out with others occasionally.

    I read recently that there have been a lot of new studies on stretching after working out and apparently it is not as beneficial as we thought. It is still beneficial to stretch but the short time after our workout, apparently doesn’t do much.

      Stretching feels so great and I think it is really beneficial, but sometimes by the end of my workout, I just want to finish because I have other things to do. Too much to do, so little time!

    I am also inconsistent with stretching!
    And #4 – I have a hearing issue and cannot hear well with lots of background noise. I sense a lot of impatience from clerks at stores and people taking my order, but I honestly cannot understand what they are saying in busy environments like that.

      That happens to me too. Background noise can really be a problem !
