Friday Five : Fitness trends

Good morning ! I am linking up with Courtney at Eat Pray Run, Cynthia at You Signed Up for What and Mar at Mar on the Run for this week’s Friday Five.

This week’s theme is fitness trends I would never try. I struggled a bit with the theme because I think I would try just about anything… if it were available in France and convenient for me to get to. When I was younger, I said I would never run, but have been for over 10 years. I hated the pool for years, and have now been going faithfully over the past 3. Over the years I have tried Step class, every kind of fitness group, Zumba, water aerobics, yoga….

The US has so many fitness trends, and many do not make their way to France. So, my twist on this week’s theme is 4 trends I would like to try, but can not due primarily lack of availability / convenience, and 1 I wouldn’t.

1. Crossfit. I think there are one or 2 Crossfit boxes in France. They are insanely expensive and inconvenient for me to get to. But everyone seems to love it and I would like to understand why so much hype.

2. Bootcamp. I have a friend in the US (Katey) who is always going and the pictures make me want to try ! Not only does she look great, but the group always seems to be having so much fun.

3. Barre / Pure barre. I have not seen this in Paris. I travel for work to the US and there is a class in the town where I go. One day !

4. A race relay, like Ragnar. There are currently 17 locations in the US so I am hopeful that it might come to France one day. Everyone seems to enjoy it.

The only trend I have no desire to try is  :

5. Pole dancing. Its a shame because there is a studio right up the street from where I live… and I went on line to find a photo. Scary. Not only have seen videos where the pole detaches from the ceiling but people wear high heel shoes. That confirms that I do not want to try it !

My fitness of choice for the moment remains running. Our last group run of the season was Thursday evening…. a running store in Paris, Team Outdoor, organizes outings a couple times a month. Yesterday they gave us a tshirt and there is a contest over the summer…. we need to take a picture of ourselves wearing the tshirt in a location of our choice. In the past people have worn it snorkeling, sky diving …Hhmmm I will need to be creative if I want to win ! Any ideas ?

I would try pole dancing – but only as a fitness exercise, NOT in high heels.

I’m so surprised there’s no barre in France. I love barre, don’t do it enough (and I’m a terrible dancer). You can do it with videos on youtube, btw.

Hah! Pole dancing made my list too! If you come to the D.C. area I can show you the Pure Barre studio near my indoor cycling studio, but I’d rather be spinning!

      I haven’t tried spinning either… maybe one day !

  3. I tried pure barre and I really didn’t like it. I would like to try pole dancing just once though. Happy Friday

Funny how some people love things and other don’t like them at all. But that’s what makes the world go round ! Have a great weekend

Ha, I have no desire to try pole dancing either although I hear it takes quite the strength. I’d like to know what all the hype is about cross fit as well. I actually had that one on my list too but took it off cus I thought maybe my perception of it was wrong.

I really hope that someone in the Friday Five posts will have tried pole dancing because many bloggers are talking about it but no one has tried it. Would like to know their perception.

I completely agree with this post… I’d try just about anything. Great minds think alike!

Too bad there is no barre/pure barre classes near you. Are dance classes popular in Paris (aside from pole dancing) ? Like ballet or jazz for adults?

I do work with a crossfit coach; but I don’t do “cross fit” per se…She incorporates CF into my training regimen, tho. I will say that it has been effective.

Wendy, that would make for a very interesting post… which CF moves or exercises you have incorperated in your training.

I think you’ll love Pure Barre. I’m w/you on the pole aspect!

Ummm yea, no desire to do pole dancing, ever. I forgot that one!

    • Karen - French Inspiration July 12, 2015 at 8:58 am Reply

Is it still just as popular? No one seems to want to try it…

  10. HoHo Runs July 11, 2015 at 3:04 pm Reply

I too would like to do a relay race. I think it would be a fun thing to experience with friends. The pole things is just awful…you also share your pole with another classmate, right? Ewww.

Hadn’t even thought about the pole share. Ew.

I want to try some of these things too! I love barre but it’s pretty pricey so I’m on a hiatus right now while I spend my money on other fitness activities, but I do love it! I am not interested in pole stuff at all!

oh gosh, pole dancing – yes I don’t think I’d ever consider trying that! It’s a shame you don’t have a lot of variety in France but hey – you live in FRANCE!

I volunteer teach a boot camp class for my running group on Wednesday mornings, and we have lots of fun! I’ve definitely have loved my experiences at my two Ragnar Relays, and look forward to my next one in the fall. I hope you have the opportunity to run one someday!
